PROFESSIONAL BOXING: UPBC TO HOST 3RD ABU CONVENTION

Sserunjogi Honored as Main Fighter Uganda is once again privileged to host the Africa Boxing Union (ABU) Convention for the third time in its history. The exciting news was announced by the Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) president, Mayor Salim Uhuru Nsubuga, during a press briefing on Thursday at Hotel Africana in Kampala. The convention will gather professional boxing national bodies from across the continent for a five-day event, which is scheduled to run from August 18th to 23rd, 2024. It will feature a series of activities, including a seminar for ring officials, agents, and promoters, culminating in a thrilling lineup of boxing matches. A two-day seminar for promoters and agents is planned to take place from August 20th to 22nd, followed by the weigh-in on the 22nd and the much-anticipated bouts on the 23rd. The World Boxing Council (WBC) and ABU will provide technical facilitators to oversee technical matters related to the agents and promoters' seminar. During the launch, UPBC president Salim Uhuru Nsubuga highlighted the significance of the convention for Uganda.

It offers our boxers the opportunity to etch their names in the history books with continental title fights. This is the third time Uganda is hosting the convention, and each occasion has resulted in substantial economic benefits," said Salim Uhuru Nsubuga, President of the Uganda Professional Boxing Commission. At this convention, there will be title fights and undercard bouts, with Uganda's Super Middleweight pugilist John Sserunjogi headlining the event. He will face Egypt's Ahmed Borishe in the main fight.
Sserunjogi expressed his gratitude and determination as the main fighter of the event: "I feel blessed. There are many fights, but mine being the main fight is a great honor, and I am ready to win this title. I want it to stay in Uganda by all means," Sserunjogi told this website. Uganda's previous ABU title winners include notable names such as Badru Lusambya, Joy Vegas Lubega, Abdul Tebazaalwa, Davis Lusimbo, Mike Kizza, Edward Kakembo, Justin Jjuuko, Faruk Dduku, Machoman Kiwanuka, Catherine Nanziri, and Latib Muwonge. Additionally, there will be a regional Super Welterweight title contest for East and Central Africa featuring Uganda's national champion Isaac "Zebra" Ssenyange Jr. against an opponent yet to be announced. On the same day, Joshua "Spyder" Nyanzi will face Power Jjunju in a welterweight bout.

The event is proudly sponsored by the government of Uganda, Hardware World, St. Mary’s Boarding Secondary School – Kitende, and the Ministry of Tourism, among others.
