
The City Tyres Badminton Challenge 2024, the most popular badminton tournament in the East African league, officially kicked off this morning at the City Tires Stage in the Industrial Area, Kampala.
Scheduled to take place from 17th to 20th October at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium, the tournament is expected to attract over 500 athletes from East African nations, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, and, for the first time, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Athletes will compete in seven categories, including Junior schools boys and girls under 10,15 and doubles, Universities to play as mixed team team, co-operate, nationals, and veterans of men above 50 and women above 45 and lastly the missionaries, with winners set to receive cash prizes sponsored by the Mandela Group of Companies.
In a symbolic gesture today, City Tyres, led by Marketing Manager Herbert Bashaasha, handed over some of the trophies to the National Badminton Federation, as well as to several athletes and coaches who will be competing in the tournament.
In last year’s tournament, Uganda claimed the championship title, followed by India in second place and Kenya in third.
Simon, CEO of Badminton Uganda, announced that registrations are ongoing until the 14th of October. He also emphasized that this year's tournament, the seventh edition, continues to serve as a platform for bringing people together and fostering regional unity.
