For starters, Babirye, the elected president of now the defunct Federation was asked to step aside in April 2023 but since then, the game has been lingering.
In November 2023, after the National Council of Sports revoked the sport’s certificate, World Netball in conjunction with National Council of Sports, they set up a normalization committee under the leadership of Swimming Federation President, Moses Mwase to normalize the sport in six months.
However, their stay has reached to 10 months but there is no sign of progress according to the stakeholders.
Basing on that long wait, some of the Netball stake holders have held a press conference on Monday at Old Kampala to give public their position against Normalization Committee.
The stakeholders who were headed by Madam Rosette Namuli Kaala Mutyaba, the former chief umpire, Dynamite Netball Club Manager Flavia Nakanwagi and current She Cranes Manager, Mugerwa Fred Tabale.
Rosette Namuli Kaala asserted that they have been critically following the actions of the Normalization Committee and they found out that NC is off the track “…we have been participating in whatever he [Moses Mwase] was telling us to do but at the same time we have been digging and checking the information especially we took time to understand what the mandate was given to him, after realizing that he is operating outside the mandate given to him, that’s why we have come out. ” Says Kaala Rosette . “we’re requesting world Netball to dissolve the normalization committee and allow the stakeholders and the government (NCS) to form a committee to manage Netball in the country to do what was mandated to the Normalization Committee because Mr. Mwase as the chairperson of Normalization Committee has no interest in the game of Netball, we want people who have interest in the game, those who worked for it, to normalize it and bring it back to the order. ” She added.
The Manager of Dynamite Netball Club, and a former player has also commented on the challenges players face in the absence of the league.
“My disappointment when it comes to NC, we’re so heartbroken because we had so much hope for the committee coming in, we saw them as saviors following the conflicts that were happening in the game, but then the Normalization Committee came to power and everything is driven to the opposite direction, let’s look at the perspective of the player, you have been depending on netball, usually when you are playing for a certain club, you have a contract but again you can only be paid when you exchanging your services for money, it’s an employment, players have lost livelihood, they are not paid , they’re moving out of the game because there is no league, its the league that brings us together. “Flavia Nakanwagi.
