Many students sit for examinations and underscore due to different and personal reasons as to why less is scored, but few take heart to reach out to their respective lecturers or supervisors to request for a Re-do of paper/ course unit. Others fear visiting those offices, some are ignorant on how and what to do whereas others easily contend with the less marks scored.
From this fourth Year journalism student who refused to settle for less but rather followed all the procedures mentioned by Examinations coordinator of Sociology and Anthropology at the department outside her school.
Justine got InTouch with her supervisor/ lecturer of that previous course unit on WhatsApp throughout the holiday of her internship and explained to him that she would want to re-do the paper. Dr. Achilles Sewaya the course unit supervisor very well encouraged her to reach out to Dr. Mugabi the examinations coordinator at the school of Social Sciences.
" In January 2024 when the semester resumed I met Dr. Mugabi in his office and....., he tried to give me guidance in order to convince me drop the idea of re-doing that paper but i refused, i insisted and did ask him make calls to whoever is responsible for me to reach my goal." Says Justine
Justine says it took her half a month to come to conclusion of her request being granted. After meeting with Dr. Mugabi, she was advised to write letters to the Dean of Social Sciences, course unit supervisor and Dr. Mugabi too.
Like any other student, ofcourse reaching out to all those responsiblee people in their respective offices is scary. Many students have been satisfied with less marks not because they deserve them but because they do not know what to do, who to go to, and how to do it?, while others are driven by fear once advised to visit respective offices to reach their complaints.
" I went through ups and downs to reach the final desk right for my letter." Said Justine. Before meeting the Dean Justine says she was disturbed by all secretaries at the offices of the two "big" people, head of department and the Dean. It looked like they're acting as obstacles for many students to reach the heads because of what she went through with them. Justine was tossed up and down asking for irrelevant documents that did not help her at all like printing out letters, submiting a hand written letter and so on plus provoking their understanding which mentally tortured her.
To cut the story short after failing to reach the Dean due to hinderance of the secretary, Dr Mugabi lost control and held her hand, rushed her pass the secretary without saying hello to her, knocked the door and entered with her to the Dean. He introduced her to the Dean and her issue and then left.
The procedure that had taken her months was solved in just 15minutes. The Dean handled the situation with high level of integrity, parental love and professionally. He signed her letter after reading through and comforted her that everything is well, do the courseworks and read hard for the final exam and as we're reading this, Justine is happily studying and promise to perform to her best.
